Writer's Block: One Hit Wonder Day

Today's National One Hit Wonder Day. Whole albums or entire ouvres can be quite impressive, but more often than not, individual songs have the largest impact on us. Which one hit wonders have played a major role in your life?

Hmm. In fact, I'm mostly impacted hugely by albums or entire ouvres. I have my standout tracks from my favourite people, but I can't think of anything that's had a huge influence on me that doesn't also come with a shedload of other good stuff that's also influenced me...

Looking at my "top 200 most played" in iTunes, from Alabama 3's Have You Seen Bruce Richard Reynolds and Monkey Swallows the Universe's Jimmy Down the Well (joint top at 46 plays) to The Clash's Should I Stay or Should I Go (sharing the bottom place at 7 plays with Camera Obscura, The Beatles, Babyshambles, Adult Net and two more Alabama 3 tracks) there's no single track by an artist which doesn't come along with lots of other good stuff from them.

If I really had to choose something, I'd go for songs that have saved my life, from Marillion's Jigsaw and the Nephilim's Psychonaut through to The Indelicates' Waiting for Pete Doherty to Die and Monkey Swallows the Universe's Science. None of those are one-hit wonders, but they're songs I clung to and played to death at various points in my life, that helped me get through some rough times.
